My body jerked with spasms; my vision came back slowly, like trickling water. I blinked dumbly as it took a second for my eyes to adjust to the darkness.
I felt Uriahâs presence, but it was muted. Power pulsated on either side of me, and with great difficulty, I pushed myself onto my elbows. I was trapped in a small cavern. The walls were made of two substances that took a few seconds to identify. A strange combination of Himalayan salt and rose quartz. Both rock faces were milky and pink. The crystals throbbed and I searched for my magic to try and Lace away, but it slipped through my hands like water. Thwarted by the rock formations.
My teeth snapped together as another bolt of agony ripped through my stomach like a hooked talon. It burnt, leaving the invisible wound jagged and open. I groaned and curled in on myself.
I called Uriah, only to realise that he was a few feet in front of me. My vision was compromised.
My breath was gone.
The sides of my throat had sucked themselves together and closed my airway. I tried to reach out for my connection to Hell but only found a low level buzzing instead.
Demonâs existed as part of a collective. Our magic was a thread that made up the weave of our dimension. I knew from experience that Angel magic was insular, the opposite. I was unable to access the magic that kept me alive.
I gasped and clawed at my throat as if I could force my body to stop trying to devour itself.
âDahlia. Listen to me. You need to break the connection.â
I would have laughed. Scoffed. But I wheezed instead. It was easy for him to say. I had been able to cut myself off from Hell when I had lived outside of the rules. I was a Sovereign. I had no idea what would happen if I snipped at the thread that kept me attached to demon magic.
Would I die?
Or simply cease to exist?
âDahlia. Please.â
My vision had gone. Claimed by darkness. The aching lines of my veins began to burn as my body grew numb. There was nothing for it.
I closed my connection to Hell.
